Houston Beagle and Hound Rescue presents Bogie, a healthy 15-inch beagle weighing in at 31 pounds. Although 2-years of age, Bogie still has quite a bit of puppy enthusiasm in him. He is very affectionate with his foster family and their mature female beagles. Bogie arrived at HBHR house-broken and doggy door trained. He does well on leash walks, and does not hesitate to express his excitement for going on walks. Bogie is improving daily with commands such as sit, off, and wait, and is learning to chew appropriate items. Bogie is best suited to a family that already has a dog, particularly an older one who is calmer than him.

If you are looking for another canine companion to add to your family, please contact HBHR about adopting adorable Bogie! Please visit www.houstonbeaglerescue.org and follow the instructions on adoption. Our regular adoption fee is $225; special needs, mixes and senior dogs are $175, and pups 8 months and younger are $275. The fee includes spay or neuter, vaccines, flea and heartworm preventative or treatment, a leash, collar or rescue ID tag, microchip, and some training. Some dogs may have had additional vet care such as orthopedic surgeries, heartworm treatment or other procedures, but these “extras” will not affect their adoption fee. HBHR always welcomes donations to help with vet care!

For Jessica Rodriguez and Wendy Phillips, grooming isn’t just their business, it’s their passion. As owner and operators of Haute Pets Mobile Grooming Salon, they take great pride bringing upscale mobile pet grooming and spa services to local Houston residents.

Four years ago, Jessica adopted her first shelter dog from the Houston SPCA. Little did she know her life would be forever changed. Stella, a 90 pound lab/golden mix bounded into her home and heart. And her recently purchased new home! Although the transition was trying at times, Stella and Jessica overcame all obstacles and developed a special connection and love for one another. But their story was just beginning. Years after Stella found Jessica, another dog would need them both. Jessica received a call from an HSPCA foster parent about a dog just like Stella at the shelter. Of course this was something Jessica had to see! Little Abby was so abused and neglected she could barely walk, but despite everything she had been through, “she had the sweetest eyes and face,” said Jessica. Just like Stella’s. Two days later, Abby was adopted and joined Jessica and Stella’s family. Stella and Abby have given Jessica unconditional love, companionship and loyalty. Through her experiences with Stella and Abby, Jessica has realized her passion lies in protecting and caring for animals.

Wendy was always a Persian cat kind of girl. Always surrounded by the beautiful felines, that is until five years ago. Wendy and her feline family of four have been joined by a Papillion, Chanel, and teacup Yorkie, Lucy. As Wendy’s cats are much older now, Chanel and Lucy accompany her almost everywhere she goes – especially to the office. She loves the idea of having a business where she can care for other people’s pets and have her pets close by every day. Sharing a common passion for animals, both Jessica and Wendy strive to bring the highest quality of service in a comfortable, stress-free environment for both dogs and cats. Each grooming experience is a positive and caring one.

Spa & Grooming Services

At Haute Pets, Jessica and Wendy offer everything from hypoallergenic pet products to tearless rinse formulas to make sure your “furry” companion receives top-quality pet grooming. Their mobile salon utilizes the latest in grooming technology to provide convenient service in a clean, upscale atmosphere to keep your pet healthy, stress-free, and well groomed. They exclusively use Aroma Paws chemical-free pet grooming products for their Haute Spa Treatments. All products are eco-friendly, biodegradable, and won’t leave behind harmful residues. Because these organic products are plant-based, they won’t sting your pet’s eyes or dry sensitive skin.

If you are looking to pamper and primp your furry friend, contact Jessica or Wendy at Haute Pets Mobile Grooming Salon by phone, 713-862-6900 or visit www.hautepets.net. Believe me; your pet will love you for it!

U.S. Commerce Association’s Award Plaque Honors the Achievement

Natural Pawz has been selected for the 2011 Houston Award in the Pet Stores category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA).

The USCA “Best of Local Business” Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2011 USCA Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USCA and data provided by third parties.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land has gone to the dogs to highlight man’s best friend and their impact on our lives and in nature. To celebrate the special exhibition The Nature of Dogs, now open at HMNS at Sugar Land, the Museum is hosting a special event on January 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. called “Dog Daze.” The event includes fun for the whole family, both two and four-legged.

“Dog Daze” attendees can peruse the photo exhibit, while learning more about the impact of dogs in our world or enjoy the special reading area, featuring children’s books about dogs, with the kiddos in your life. Think you have the prettiest pup in town? Grab your costumed canine and enter the Pretty Pooch Pageant and compete for bragging rights at the dog park. Our photographer will be on hand to take your pup’s photo which you can proudly display on the Museum’s The Nature of Dogs community board for everyone to see. Canine-friendly vendors will be on hand to provide information, resources, and rewards (in the form of some tasty treats) while highlighting many of the great things you and your family can do with your dog in our fine city. No matter what, everyone is sure to have a barking good time!

The Nature of Dogs features the photographic artwork of Mary Ludington, who seeks to capture the true nature of these loving animals – their beauty, character and spirit – through photographs. Ludington’s photos capture the particular personalities of sixty different breeds, from the handsome and feisty Irish Terrier, to the exuberant and hardy Labrador Retriever. Her subjects roam outdoors while she quietly observes, letting the dogs dictate her shots. The striking collection of photographs that results from this natural approach offer us a glimpse of the dogs in their element—whether caught midstride or in an hour of well-earned relaxation.

The Nature of Dogs is on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land from Dec. 16, 2011 through Feb. 19, 2012. Tickets to “Dog Daze” are $15; $10 for members. Admission for your dog is free. To purchase tickets or learn more about The Nature of Dogs exhibit, visit www.hmns.org or call (713) 639-4629.

About Mary Ludington:

Mary Ludington specializes in fine art animal photography through commissioned portraiture and personal work. She has received numerous awards; her photographs are exhibited nationally and are collected throughout the world. She participates in dog conformation, field trial and earth dog sports and devotes time to dog and horse rescue efforts.
The Houston Museum of Natural Science—one of the nation’s most-heavily attended museums—is a centerpiece of the Houston Museum District. With four floors of permanent exhibit halls, including the Wortham IMAX® 3D Theatre, Cockrell Butterfly Center, Burke Baker Planetarium and George Observatory and as host to world-class and ever-changing touring exhibitions, the Houston Museum has something to delight every age group.

The Houston Humane Society(HHS) wants everyone to take the following steps to be sure pets are safe during this flood.

If you evacuate or leave home, be sure to take your pet with you!

If possible, keep all pets indoors at this time. If not in the house, at least in the garage where they can be kept dry.

Be cautious about letting your pet play in or drink ground water. Water may be contaminated or contain dangerous debris.

It’s a good idea to crate pets or secure them in a room they feel safe during thunderstorms.

Be sure to dry off the paws, legs, and stomach of your dog when you bring them back in from outside.

Be sure to keep children and pets away from downed power lines, debris, and fallen tree branches.

Use caution when returning home. Snakes, insects, and other animals may seek refuge on higher ground.

Give pets time to re-orient themselves. Familiar scents and landmarks may be altered and cause your pet confusion.

The Houston Humane Society wants you to Be Alert! In recent weeks we’ve heard several alarming stories of thieves posing as various officials to rob homes, but it’s not just your cash and jewels you need to protect. In North Carolina there have been reported cases of thieves posing as Animal Control officers hoping to steal family pets. It is believed these thieves steal the animals in hopes of selling them to turn a quick profit. Though there have not been any reported cases in Texas, the Houston Humane Society wants you to be on the alert. Here are a few tips to keep your pet safe:

Animal Control Officers, just like police officers, fire marshals, and other city/county officials are required to carry proper identification and badges. Ask to see it!

Animal Control Officers are required to be in uniform and drive marked vehicles.

Don’t hesitate to call your local animal control office and verify the officer’s identification and reason for visiting.

Houston Humane Society does NOT pick up stray animals, and our cruelty division is handled by law enforcement driving official vehicles. If an individual identifies his or herself as representing Houston Humane Society, ask to see their identification.

The absolute best way to protect your pet from thieves is to never leave them unattended outside.

Make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing current tags at all times. Also, keep them up to date on vaccinations, including rabies. Animal Control Officers will often ask to see a copy of your pet’s rabies certification.
